Bella Isla Cafe

Chelsea-born and raised, Rosaivette Baez and her family own the Bella Isla Café, the only Puerto Rican restaurant in Chelsea. The menu shines with island favorites like mofongo made of garlic and adobo seasoned mashed plantains, as well as the sturdy tripleta sandwich piled high with pulled pork, steak, and chicken. The quick service cafe offers a variety of empanadas, including gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Rosaivette and the Baez family want to make sure that their customers taste what they cherish: a vibrant, family-oriented culture with high quality, distinctly seasoned food to match.

Rosaivette works alongside her mother in the kitchen to prepare recipes passed down from her grandmother. Among those dishes is the succulent Pernil, Puerto Rico’s iconic pork shoulder rubbed with a paste of onion, garlic, sofrito, achiote, and cooked for more than six hours. This dish alone draws customers from long distances to this tiny shop.

Belle Isla’s coffee is brought in from Puerto Rico—a robust caffeine fix that is the perfect balance to a slice of Bella Isla’s silky, rich homemade vanilla or coconut flan.

Rosaivette loves what she’s doing. Grab a empanadilla to go, or enjoy a heaping side of tostones at one of the sidewalk tables, and you will also love what she’s doing.
